LUXURY TO THE SUBURBS!

As the Finnish government has repeatedly stated, opera is still perceived solely as an exclusive privilege and luxury reserved for the elite. To counter this misconception, Turku’s versatile independent artists are creating an open and mobile opera performance in collaboration with local residents. The performance is brought to life by Ååbbera, Artsoppa, and the Together Association. The premiere will take place on November 24, 2024, at 2 PM, at none other than the multicultural heart of Finland’s suburbs, Turku’s Varissuo Shopping Center.

This pop-up opera performance is part of Turku’s leading cultural project for pop-up art and features some of the most timeless pieces of musical theater. The story is crafted specifically for the Varissuo event.

Ååbbera’s soprano soloists Riikka Sirén and Mia Heikkinen, baritone and tango king Jarno Kokko, and bass Nicholas Söderlund will perform. Pianist Henna Linko and accordion artist Marko Valtonen will ensure a rich and resonant sound of opera and musical highlights. The performance is directed by actor Jerry Wahlforss.

A significant part of the vocal force is provided by Vakke’s very own opera choir, open to anyone interested. The choir will be led by the esteemed conductor Teemu Honkanen. Rehearsals will be held in the Together Association’s space in the lower level of Varissuo Library on Tuesday, November 12, and Tuesday, November 19, from 6 PM to 8 PM, and on Saturday, November 23, from 9:30 AM to 11 AM. Additionally, the choir will rehearse together with the soloists on Sunday, November 24, before the performance. Every choir singer is important and warmly welcomed! The choir will sing this wonderful song from the musical Les Miserables.
